IM Goh Wei Ming, Kevin's Chess Site

Blog EntryMay 9, '08 7:46 PM
for everyone

Chesspublishing.com is a premier opening theory website that was started by GM Tony Kosten in the late 1990s. The website is divided into 12 sections which are mostly managed by GMs or IMs (some very famous names here):

1.e4 e5-GM Tony Kosten
French-GM Neil Mcdonald
King's Indian-GM Victor Mikhalevski
Open Sicilians (without Dragon)-IM Richard Palliser
Dragon-GM Chris Ward (who else is more suitable?)
Anti-Sicilians-GM John Shaw
1.e4 (without 1.e4 e5)- IM John Watson
Flank Openings-FM Carsten Hansen
1.d4 d5-GM Ruslan Scherbakov
d-pawn Specials (covering openings like the London System, Tromp)-GM Eric Prie
Nimzo & Benoni-GM John Emms
Daring Defences (Grunfeld, Benko, Owen defence)-GM Glenn Flear

Subscribers can choose to subscribe either 1 section, 3 (at the price of 2), 6, or the full membership at the following prices:

The columnists review recent developments in the Chess world pertaining to the Openings they are in charge of with in-depth analysis of the latest GM games on a monthly basis. Besides, you get to access all the previous updates dating back to when the website first started. So what you get is essentially, a monthly update by a competent and enthusiastic annotator and a useful database of annotated games. One thing though, not every opening gets the kind of coverage that you might wish for as the columnists mainly look at topical lines but so far, I have not encountered a single variation that has not been covered before on the website.

With this concept, Tony Kosten has struck a niche in the congested Chess publishing market and Chesspublishing.com is now a highly reputable and popular resource for theoretical information. Not to say it doesn't has its disadvantages: I bet many must have written in to dispute about GM Chris Ward enjoying the luxury of analyzing purely Dragon games while IM Richard Palliser has to review the Najdorf, Sveshnikov, Classical Sicilian and the rest of the Sicilians in 1 column. Not to say that both these writers have not done an excellent job, on the contrary, I really enjoy their annotations but you really wonder how an extra columnist to share the work load of Richard can evenly spread the coverage of the different Sicilians. If the Dragon has a column all to itself, surely the Najdorf deserves one!

Another complaint of mine is that GM Scherbakov is persistently late in his uploading of his 1.d4 d5 column. It is already May and I am still waiting for the March updates to be published!

All in all, www.chesspublishing.com is definitely worth subscribing and the prices are reasonable for a year's subscription. You might be advised to try out a section first and see whether you are used to the soft-copy cbv file format or you still much prefer studying opening theory by delving into that chess book you bought a week ago. In my opinion, Chesspub might not be as famous and wide ranging as the major publications such as NIC year books, NIC magazines, Informator, or Chessbase Magazines but they are definitely up there with them in terms of theoretical coverage and good down to earth annotations, often spiced with some british humor.

Another reason to subscribe? Your writer, me, is going to be a guest columnist! Just watch out for the May update of 1.e4 e5 column....
